How to wear a vest in the summer

Tis the season for bright colors. I can’t believe we’re already about halfway through summer (bummer!). So I’m making sure to wear my warm-weather finds from this season as well as favorites from year’s past, all while making time to enjoy the nice weather. Even if it’s just for a coffee run, (or in my case, Iced Chai Tea Latte — so addicting!) it’s nice to just get outside and feel the sun on your skin. A bright hue can also brighten your mood, I know it does for me.

{ Style Tips }

1. Balance your body in a flowing outfit by adding a vest.  It will bring things in and keep your billowy pieces from overwhelming your frame.

2. A little color goes a long way.  This outfit may feel bright, and that’s thanks to the top, turquoise bangle, and blue nails. Don’t be afraid to wear more than one bright hue.

3. Skip the heavy blush and wear a pink top to brighten you up. It has a way of  complementing the complection.

{ Cinderella Chic } Fairytale Fashion For Real Life

One question I get a lot is what brands do I love/where I do shop. The answer is always the same yet different. It starts with “everywhere” and ends with a different list of favorites — depending on mood, moment and memory, of course. This post is not going to list out my favorite brands and shops (though I will add that to my idea notebook). No, instead it’s a roundup of pretty things from a line I tend to have very good luck with, LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s. The designs are really cute, fit my style and body, and then there’s also the fact that Kohl’s is almost never not running some sort of sale.

This time she’s taking a whimsical approach with inspiration from a certain well-known story, Cinderella. Here’s how to do fairytale fashion in real life.  Below are three looks along with my take on wear to where & why I love it.

The Perfect Present For The Chic Canine

Pet collars so adorable  you’ll wish they were made for humans, or that you at least have a dog to spoil and style  — got a dog lover or perhaps a pretty pooch on your gift list? BaubleBar’s current guest bartender “bark”tender is furry and has fabulous taste. It’s Jiff, a famous pomeranian, and more importantly, the collars in the collection are super swoonworthy and made to look like fashion jewelry. There’s a collar designed to look like a pearl-and-chain choker necklace, and others with crystals and glitter. The line has collars for small, medium, and large dogs with prices under $50.

The furry fashionistas modeling the styles certainly add to the cute factor.

{Trendy vs Spendy} Pleather // Leather

A wardrobe full of pieces that can be styled endlessly is definitely a Trend-Hungry-girl must (have  you seen the Dare to Wear column??). Faux leather is an affordable way to look chic and indulge in this fall trend – leather skirts. When the weather cools down throw on a comfy loose-fit knit sweater. The sweater gives off a super-casual style, so you can wear this from day to night. If you’re going for a more dressed-up look, pair your skirt with opaque tights and/or simple flat boots. The key to wearing boots with this is similar to Rule #1 from the Double Denim Trend: Mix your washes. Likewise, find some boots that don’t closely match your skirt.

Leather skirts can add some flair to your wardrobe, and all the Trendy & Spendy options below are so so so fabulous. Here are three different styles to choose from.

1. Pleats Please!

Trendy: Lily White, Pleat Faux Leather Skirt, $14.97

Spendy: Alice + Olivia Pleated Leather Skirt, $495.00

2. The Modern Midi

Trendy: Charlotte Russe Faux Leather Full Midi Skirt, $22.99 $15.00

Spendy: Valentino Lightweight Leather Skirt, $4,990.00

3. Flirty Minis

Trendy: Topshop Faux Leather Mini Skirt, $34.97

Spendy: Sam Edelman Faux Leather Mini Skirt, $89.00

Here’s how I plan on wearing my favorite leather skirt

{DIY} Turn Your Old Tee Into a Crop Top

upcycle old tee shirt

When I attempt a DIY it’s gotta be an easy one. Too many steps or lots of directions mean I won’t be participating. But when this shirt was headed to the trash (sleeves looked gross) I had to save it and thought to try a little tailoring. So I hacked into my boyfriend’s old tee to first shorten, then chop the sleeves. I tried it back on and knew the neckline needed a little work so I cut a V shape and slipped it back on.

This shirt may be a little revealing so wear with a pretty bra, over a bikini, or with a vest over it, like I did for a recent Dare to Wear post.

{Steal of the Week} Designer Sunnies on Sale

Oh hey, shady lady. It turns out today is National Sunglasses Day. I’ll be sure to mark my calendar for next year so it doesn’t slip my mind. I’m an avid sunglass wearer and rock every season since eye and wrinkle protection is kind of important. Sunglasses are one item I don’t love splurging on, but do like to treat myself to a nice pair (deeply discounted, of course) every couple of years. Sunglasses, like a your bag or shoes can really elevate your outfit. You can rock designer sunnies with a Forever 21 outfit and somehow your outfit looks more expensive, all thanks to the sunnies.

Five Under $50: Kate Middleton Style Steals

Kate Middleton looks gorgeous in everything! Her natural British and sleek style has made her one of my style icons. Whether she’s attending a royal event, grocery shopping, or playing sports, Kate keeps an effortless and graceful look. She’s known for mixing spendy high end designer pieces with trendy street wear, so it’s easy for an average girl to achieve her royal style.

Here are five pieces under $50 for a royal inspired wardrobe:

1. Royal Bling

Kate wore a priceless diamond necklace borrowed from the queen.  It was crafted by Cartier in the ‘30s and is named The Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace.

JCPenny has a similar style faux diamond necklace for $12.

{Tastemaker Spotlight} Jess from ‘Carats & Cake’

carats and cake

Let’s get some questions and answers up in here. Jess Levin from Carats & Cake is here to answer some of our burning questions for the trendsetting entrepreneur! If you haven’t heard of Jess yet, read on and you’ll be hooked on her wedding style advice and cool business concept! Read on. – Jessie

carats and cake

1.     I understand Carats and Cake was born after you witnessed your friend have difficulty planning her wedding. Tell us about why you started Carats & Cake.

I was sitting in a business school lecture discussing De Beers, the diamond company, when I first started thinking about the wedding space (of course a lecture on diamonds naturally leads one to think about weddings!). After spending a few months researching the industry (and yes hearing some of my newly engaged friends complain about the process), I realized that there was an opportunity to deliver a better way to connect aspirational brides directly with high-end local vendors.

2.     What makes Carats and Cake stand out from all the other wedding planning sites and apps?

Carats & Cake is a resource that allows brides-to-be to go beyond inspiration by providing direct access to local vendors reviewed by recently married couples. Carats & Cake now has the largest high-end vendor database and is the only resource where you can see real weddings directly tagged with real vendors and their reviews all in one place.

3.     Does your site appeal to budget friendly brides? If so, how?

At Carats & Cake, it’s more about taste than cost. Our weddings are definitely at the high-end of the market, but we have everything from the stunning back yard bash to the over top elegant affair. Our goal is to empower our brides by making sure that we are providing unfiltered access to information so that they can turn their inspiration into reality and make the right decision based on their unique needs and vision.

4.     What advice would you give to brides who want to create a dynamic wedding on a budget?

Prioritize. Make a list of the things that are important to you and rank them. Splurge on the things that matter and figure out how to save with things that don’t. Obsessing over a designer dress? Then see if a friend can make you an amazing play list so you don’t have to pay for a DJ. A flower aficionado? Make sure your florist can re-use flowers from the ceremony in the reception.

5.     What are some popular wedding trends can we expect to see?

It’s all about personalization at the moment, from signature cocktails to alternative desserts, and I think this trend will only get bigger as more couples want their celebrations to really capture their essence as opposed to subscribe to traditional norms. I am most excited to see this play out in regards to wedding dresses. A lot of designers have been showing color and we love the blushes and greys that are making their way mainstream.

What We’re Buying: The Bra With Pockets

You read the title correctly. There is in fact a bra with pockets that will store your key items – money, ID, a key, even your phone! Perfect for the club, a concert, a house party, or a run (there’s a sports bra too!) – the JoeyBra was made to give some safe storage when living life and it sounds like they sorority girls in mind.

This fashion invention was created by two recent college grads that met their junior year and were inspired by their school’s vibrant Greek system and created the JoeyBra for women who on the go and struggle to find a place to put their ID, keys, or phone.

I put the sport to the test and gotta say I can’t go back to my old sports bras. It made running carefree. I used to store my keys and phone in my old sports bras, but it got in the way and made sprints not an option. This product is a total problem solver. It also has an adjustable back for fit convenience.

The fashion bra costs $29.99 and the sport is $39.99.
