{ Video } The Most Thoughtful Birthday Present!!

fashion blogger birthday video

My blog photog, she’s so rad. Her name is Audrey. She is super cool, creative, genuine, goodhearted, fun, fabulous, and I am SO beyond happy to know her!  We’ve been collaborating for way more than a minute and it’s been such a blast. Before her, I didn’t even know that I ever wanted to do outfit posts. That changed once we shot together and it’s been a monthly date ever since.

Audrey isn’t only a dream to work with (it doesn’t feel like work with her!!), she’s become my friend.  As the blog title says, this post involves the most thoughtful birthday present. I recently turned 28 and got a birthday text from Audrey, but unlike the others I received, this one had a YouTube link. It led me to this video, and a face of awe, and a huge smile, and teary eyes.

THANK YOU AUDREY!!! I’m SO incredibly touched by this video!!

I hope you enjoy watching it. It’s filled with lots of our silly photoshoot outtakes and positive words.  These sweet messages Audrey wrote for me made me feel so good. Not only did  I feel so loved by this gesture, it was a good reminder to not take myself too seriously and always be loving to myself. It’s something I know and practice, but it’s always good to reaffirm it. It’s so easy to be critical of ourselves or worry about what people think, especially when you are putting yourself out there (it comes with the blogging, TV, and even social-media territory).

We are all special and unique so celebrate yourself and like she says at the end, “stay fabulous!”

{ Dare To Wear } Statement Necklace + Stripes

Philadelphia Fashion blog

The other day it was freezing, the next day is supposed to be in the 70s and sunny. That’s the joy of March, my birthday month! One day it’s warm and sunny and the next, a snow storm. As a kid I’d get so upset when it’d snow on my birthday. It meant I had to move my party to a different day. My mom would have to remake cupcakes for my class. One year it was snowing so much that we lost power during the party, which I believe was at McDonalds and was in celebration of the pivotal sixth birthday.

This outfit, it’s pretty perfect for this time of year. The sweater is light. The hat instantly adds warmth and can be taken off as quickly as these temps change. As for the eye-catching necklace, this baby livens up the look with interesting color. Take note: some of the stones have a marbled effect going on — so cool! The placement of the stones and shapes give me the feel of florals in an artistic, abstract way. I also love it layered with a favorite vintage choker I’ve had for a couple years.

 { Style Tips }

1. Top it off with a beanie and bling. I’m always cold and jewelry can really be that pop of personality to make your outfit feel fun and unique to you.

2. Don’t match. The unexpected is extra special. I didn’t spent time agonizing over the fact that the boots are brown and the sweater stripes are black. I wore it because I liked it. End of story.

3. Get comfy. Clothes are meant to be lived in. When I shop I pretty much only buy things that I just want to live in — like jeans, flat boots, a comfy sweater and a beanie (so I won’t have to fuss over my hair). I’d rather spend money on pieces I’ll love to live in rather than just stare at in my closet. That’d be no fun.

{ Three Ways To Wear } Anorak Jacket

Jessie Holeva lifestyle blogger

Fall came. It’s here and this one jacket has been serving me well as the weather + my style transitions.

Can we talk about the location of these pics for a sec? It may be my most favorite yet. The lovely Renee Patrone of Events by Renee was so gracious to let us shoot in her really cool space, Pineapple on Main (that you can rent for a gathering or workshop!). The space is the hub of some cool, creative entrepreneurs in the event, styling and decor biz. So of course there were some super-cute spots to shoot.

{ Dare To Wear } Happy-Hour Chic

QVC LOGO by Lori Goldstein style correspondent

And now, time for another edition of Dare To Wear, the blog series that keeps the fashions in rotation so that outfit remixes can be made. The more you play with your clothes the more ideas you’ll come up with (I type from experience).

This long-and-lovely tank top with a slitted skirt may not be my initial instinct, but when I want to create three different looks using the same piece it pushes me to rework the wardrobe. The result = new outfits! Can’t be mad at that. I’m especially not mad at this look and will be keeping in mind for the next time I need to look happy-hour chic. The top keeps it ladylike with a relaxed vibe, while the slit adds a splash of sexiness.

{ Style Tips }

1. Wear a belt. A belt is the accessory that brings things in and helps to create that hourglass shape.

2. Borrow from a friend to get the look just right. I forgot my bag of jewelry at home (couldn’t even believe it!) so borrowed the sunnies in the previous look and bracelet from my friend Kate, who also assisted on the shoot and scouted this great location.

3. Carry yourself with confidence. It really is the secret sauce to looking your best. Wear it and work it.

4. Accessorize your accessories & embrace the unexpected. The tassel (it’s a DIY coming up!) clipped onto the hat may be my favorite thing about this whole look. It’s a little detail that’s the perfect unexpected accent.

{ Dare To Wear } Kimono + Double Denim

How to wear a kimono

Like my kimono? It’s from one of my favorite people. My dear friend Kristen sent it to me all the way from Hawaii. Though she and I don’t like close to each other anymore (she’s based in LA but lived a few months in Hawaii earlier this year), but we still manage to swap clothes when we do get together, though this one was meant for me to keep. It came in the mail along with a cool coral necklace she made me, a bottle of black sand, a hair product made by a friend she met while living there, and of course a thoughtful note — she’s the cutest + I absolutely LOVED the care package she sent me!! So when I wear this kimono I think of my boho babe, Kristen. Jessie’s Fashion-Blogging Advice To Philadelphia University

fashion-blogging-philadelphia-university

When the Philadelphia Inquirer fashion columnist asks you to speak to her Fashion Journalism class you say when. And that’s what happened. The lovely Elizabeth Wellington asked me to come talk to her students at Philadelphia University about fashion blogging. It was such an honor to share my story, lessons learned, and explain how starting this blog changed my life (for real, it really did, and I’m SO grateful for it!!). I spoke from the heart and the top of my head while students tweeted some of my dream-chasing nuggets. Read a few below and check out this Ellen-style selfie we took. Continue reading…

{Celeb Style Steal} Selena’s Striped Budget Buys

selena gomez wearing mesh stripes

Che, che, check this out! Selena Gomez is just like us and wears Forever 21. The striped mesh top she recently posed in for an Instagram picture is for the budget retailer and is currently for sale for $15.80 – can’t be mad at that.

You have to admit, she makes this $16 shirt look pretty darn good in her Instagram pic. Thanks MTVStyle for tipping us off on Selena’s skinny-budget style!

This isn’t the only time we’ve seen her rock this trend for cheap. Check out the dress she wore last month. It’s Zara’s combination dress with hood for under $50. Notice that mesh stripe detail?

{Trendy vs Spendy} Heart Blouse on a Budget

lily-collins-heart-blouse

This ultra-feminine print is all over Burberry and it’s making our hearts pitter patter for their $795 blouse made popular by Victoria Beckham, Claire Danes, Lily Collins (check her out rocking it in Glamour mag over the summer), and Harry Styles. Alas, a blouse for almost $800 kinda goes against our skinny-budget mantra, so we’ve scouted the stores and found a similar top for under $25. You’re welcome!

It may not be identical, but saving $770 makes it okay, don’t ya think?

Trendy: LC Lauren Conrad Blouse$44.00 $24.99 at Kohl’s.

Spendy: Burberry, $795 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Other celebs that rock the heart print as of late include Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, and Zooey Deschanel.

Like this trend toned down, check out this heart-print chambray top for under $20!
