Fashion, trendy vs spendy

{Trendy vs Spendy} Black Lace Looks for Less

Last week, Jessie talked about why an all black-everything outfit is a good look and I absolutely agree with her! New York Fashion Week showed many ways to wear black. The trend that stood out from the rest? Black lace. Designers, such as Vera Wang, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren featured black lace outfits in their NYFW 2014 collections. Of course, celebrities such as, Giuliana Rancic, Kendall Jenner, and Cate Blanchett, could not get enough of this chic look.

I love a little black dress with lace details all over.  This textured trend can be worn as a hint of detail for some edge or all over for a feminine vibe. Black lace is very versatile and perfect for date night, a cocktail party, or a night out with some friends!

Honestly, I’m lusting for all of these trendy and spendy pieces. Here’s how to get the black lace trend on a skinny budget:

from left to right

ASOS Lace High Neck Prom Dress for $37.64 | Forever 21 Charming Lace Skirt for $10.80 | Anne Klein Lace Overlay Sheath Dress – Elbow Sleeve for $129 now $48.37

Betsey Johnson Contrast Quarter Sleeve Lace Dress for $158 | Michael Kors Floral Embellished Lace Skirt for $5,995 now $3,587 | Lauren Ralph Lauren Petite Three-Quarter-Sleeve Lace Dress for $184

Trend Hungry’s New York Fashion Week Photo Diary

Last Wednesday I trekked to NYC for a fashion-filled day at the end of NYFW. I got to go backstage and find out about all the beauty trends strutting down the runway straight from the hair, makeup, and manicure masters themselves! The Trend Hungry NYFW backstage interviews will be up later this week! I seriously cannot wait to share with you, but for now backstage pics will have to do.

1. Daisy Fuentes

I got to talk to the head of Maybelline Japan & the lead nail artist for the day. You will LOVE what Daisy went with for her model’s beauty style. Plus, all the products used fro makeup and nails are uber budget friendly. We also go a sneak peek at a new Maybelline product that comes out this November (hint: it’s pictured!!). We’ll give you more details this week!

My friend Courtney stepped in as camera woman for the day.

Polish II. The models wore it and it’s only $4 a bottle! My friend Rose from the brand invited me backstage  – thanks Rose!

2. Mordekai by Ken Borochov

The avant-garde designer behind luxe accessories line was a dream to talk to. His pieces have been donned by Lady GaGa, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rita Ora and many more. Can you see why the celebs love his pieces?

Pink makeup to match the accessories. You like?

Celebrity hairstylist Edward Tricomi was there for hair and gave details on healthy hair at home. Video interview will be up later this week!

3. Spanx Press Preview

I absolutely love this brand. I got to interview the founder Sara Blakely this past winter when Spanx invited me to their grand opening press event at King of Prussia Mall.  While in NYC I swung by their popup showroom to see what’s new with Spanx … and there’s quite a lot.  Shapewear pants – yes please!

4. T. Tandon

This event was at the Empire hotel, as was the Spanx event. Even Joan Rivers and the Fashion Police team were at the Empire. This brand may not be considered budget friendly, but we can certainly take inspiration for spring 2014 from this tea-party chic style.

5. DBA Gifting Suite

I love finding out about the newest in fashion and beauty (obviously!) so I can’t wait to put my new goodies from the #DBALovingThis Suite to the test.

Fashion News: Peter Som Partners with Kohl’s DesigNation

This announcement was timed just right, with NYFW in full swing. Big-deal designer and a favorite among celebrities, Peter Som is partnering with Kohl’s DesigNation to bring to us budget babes his designs affordably. Peter Som for DesigNation will be a limited-edition collection inspired by St. Barths and is set to debut Spring 2014 at Kohl’s and Kohls.com.

“The island of St. Barths is a favorite vacation spot of mine. Full of luxury and serenity, with chic cottages lining the harbor and colorful designer boutiques, the island has a French charm that floats throughout the city,” said Som. “I am thrilled to partner with Kohl’s to bring this DesigNation collection to life and provide women with beautiful clothing that emulates the luxe lifestyle of St. Barths at a great value.”

Unlike other diffusion lines, Kohl’s DesigNation features a different designer and collections and take inspiration from different destinations.

Do you think any of Som’s famous fans will don his DesigNation collection? Stars that have worn Som style are heavy fashion hitters including: Beyonce, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Rachel McAdams, Allison Williams, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ginnifer Goodwin

Diffusion Lines seem to be a continuing trend. It was just recently that Trend Hungry posted looks from 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target, and we’re counting down the days until Catherine Malandrino for Kohl’s DesigNation launches (Sept. 27!!).

What’s your take? Do you love when designers do diffusion? Comment below or tweet to @jessieholeva #trendhungry!

Artful Accessories for 2013

accessory trends

By Catherine

Keeping up with the catwalk doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive. One of the easiest ways to update your look for the new season is with some artfully-chosen accessories. And you have plenty to choose from! Some simple jewelry, a hot bag, or even just rejuvenating your makeup can all help to keep you looking stylish. So if you want to get on trend, here are some fresh ideas to get you started.

  1. Red red red! For New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013, Anna Sui’s models were sporting a vampy red lipstick paired with red-framed vintage cats-eye sunglasses and a washed-out burgundy in the hair for a strong look this year.
  2. Monochrome and citrus colors are big this season as the sixties continues to influence the runway. Think Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton. You can brighten up a black and white palette with a splash of citrus—lime, orange, lemon— and choose from many monochrome handbags.
  3. Try a roses-based theme. Statement necklaces have been a staple for a few seasons but roses on anything are trending for 2013. Check out this black rose number from Oscar de la Renta followed by a matching bracelet with one single large rose. Also keep an eye out for rose prints on bags for a great spring and summer accessory.
  4. Embrace animal prints. If you like your prints a little bit feistier, animal prints look set to continue to be popular through this season and the next. You don’t have to look like Pat Butcher to wear them either! Opt for leopard or tiger prints on bags or shoes for a subtle nod to this continuing trend.
  5. Metallics are still with us this season and are an easy trend to wear. Silver or golden sandals are an excellent way to wear metallics without overdoing it. Another option is a chunky piece of jewelry in gold or silver. An oversized bracelet ticks the metallics and statement jewelry boxes for any fashion fan.

Manicures: How to “Nail It” This Valentine’s Day

Waiting and wishing for the perfect Valentine’s Day this year? I hope you’re planning on more than indulging in chocolate truffles and conversation hearts! Whether you’re coupled up or riding solo this V-Day, it’s the perfect chance to rock a cute and flirty mani! Break out your reds, pinks, hearts and sparkles, and with little creativity, you’ll have a romantic manicure that will have all your friends swooning a “Be Mine” <3!

So we all know the classic red manicure is always beautiful, but I think Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to shake things up a bit. So we searched the internet for some easy DIY’s for your digits!

1. Pink & Gold. This is similar to what Tracy Reese showed at this past NYFW. And, it’s something you can totally do free hand. Check out how Ivana Thinks Pink pulled it off! She did a video tutorial so stealing the looks is easy breezy!

2. Do Dots.  To achieve dots on your digits, simply apply a base coat of red. Let your nails dry fully, then, using a a dotting tool (tooth pick or pointy Q-tip will do the trick), dip the end in a white polish (even White Out works!) and apply polka dots in any design you wish! Wait several minutes for the dots to dry to apply a clear top coat. Too cute!  We found this look at Clothes, Cosmetics and Chat

3. Seeing Pink. Check out this mani mix by Dressed Up Nails. It’s as user friendly as it gets, but still makes a statement.

4. Over-The-Moon-In-Love Mani.  My personal favorite style may seem like the most intricate and challenging style, but even a nail-art newbie like myself pulled this one off with ease. The Beauty Department created this tutorial and they’re ultra fab for giving in-depth tutorials. It’s your basic half-moon mani, but with nails strips underneath instead of polish. Here’s the Trend Hungry tutorial on the half-moon mani.

Now that you’ve seen our faves, show us what you’ll be rocking this V-day! Comment and share your own marvelous manis or Instagram a pic and tag #trendhungry or @trendhungryblog!

Sexy & Sheer: Steal RiRi’s Grammy Style (Under $40!!)

If you didn’t catch the Grammys last night, you missed a night full of stellar performances, surprise wins, and of course, jaw-dropping fashion! It’s official – skin is definitely in…I mean did you see J.Lo’s dress?!?! From midriffs to cut-out dresses and plunging necklines, the stars were definitely showing off their beach-ready bodies. But our favorite look by far was the sheer. It’s practical, sexy, and gives coverage with a little bit of tease. Just make sure you don’t go sheer from head to toe – that’s a major NO NO.

What celebs stole the show in sheer? Ashanti, Kelly Rowland, Alicia Keys and of course, Rihanna – this girl can do no wrong!
Rihanna rocked the red carpet in her long, sheer dress matched with a matte red lip. The cut and length of the dress covers all the right areas while still encompassing some playfulness and sex appeal.

Steal the look in time for Valentine’s Day! Opt for a cocktail dress with sheer details.

Our recommendation: Pins and Needles High-Neck Chiffon Dress  $109.00 $39.99 at Urban Outfitters.

 If that’s not your style…

Snag a skirtThrow on some heels and elongate those legs! Red is always sexy and this leaves room for the imagination. ($26.99)

Shop the trend. Scroll through the showroom below and tell us how you’d rock the trend!

Open a Bottle of Wine Nail Polish

By Kelsey

For the nail-polish obsessed, the best fall fashion accessory is deep red nails. Think red wine! Deep-red nails are stirred up major buzz at New York Fashion Week and have been a big street-style trend. These red-wine colors are a perfect accent color to your fall favorites. Different variations of this deep red-wine color (dark red, deep purple, burgundy) is a trend that’s here to stay and we are here to share some of our favorites with you.

wine inspired nail colors

1. Forever 21 – Wine Stain $2.80 // 2. Butter London – Dark Red $14.00 // 3. OPI – Malaga Wine $7.95 // 4. Essie – Skirting The Issue $8.00 // 5.  Sally Hansen – Red Zin $6.99

Red wine stains lips and teeth. These dark hues do the same and can leave some unsightly yellow nails after its taken off, so don’t skip a good basecoat to keep your digits in mint condition. This versatile color will look excellent with earth tones and prints. We’re loving this trend so much that we’ll be rocking lips to match!

Comment below and tell us your favorite color for your nails for fall!
