{Trend Hungry Tuesday} How to Style Turtlenecks

selena gomez- turtleneck

Turtlenecks have been on our must-shop list for more than a minute. This style I once donned in snowman print, penguins, hearts, and leaves (I owned different ones to match the holiday  – #embarrassing!) feels kinda 90’s, and a slew of celebrities are bringing the turtleneck back to the fashion forefront.

Though the turtleneck never really left, it’s now looking cooler than ever thanks to some A-listers and their stylists. Celebrities spotted in turtlenecks include Jennifer LopezNicole RichieSelena GomezKim KardashianKylie Jenner, and Rihanna.

There are many, many more stars who’ve rocked the high neck, one of which is Britney Spears. She’s sported tight-hugging turtlenecks since the beginning of her career and MTVStyle just honored her 32nd birthday with this Britney Spears turtleneck GIF .

There are a ton of turtleneck styles – long sleeve, short, cutout sleeve, sleeveless, cropped, sheer …. the possibilities are endless.

Looking to try this trend on a budget? Of course you are!

Here’s a few style suggestions…

How to style a cropped turtleneck.

With a high-waisted skirt. Kim Kardashian has been owning this style and it shows a pinch of skin, just enough to add a little drama and edge to your ensemble. Less is more and this is under $10!

But this one is more versatile and can work any season.

How to style a classic turtleneck.

Anyway. Seriously. Tuck it in. Wear with jeans, a skirt, with overalls, you kinda can’t mess this up.

How to style a sleeveless turtleneck.

Sleek. this baby show your arms and clings to the chest. Add a little refinement to leather pants by pair with this top. This style looks extra sharp when tucked in.
Looking for more? All of these are under $25!

Hey Fashionistas! We know Sandy has got ya down. Those of us in her reach probably have a serious case of cabin fever and we’re ready to get out. It may be too wet and dangerous (depending on your location) but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress up. Here are three Halloween-themed blog posts by the Trend Hungry team.

In need of a quick costume? “Gangnam Style” is easy, fun, and very topical. Bonus: that blazer is on trend and will get more wear than just on Halloween! Or try this DIY on for size and become “Call Me Maybe”. These two music-inspired costumes are perfect for a last-minute look for Halloween!

Celebrities Are Going Skeletal

With Halloween just around the corner, celebs are getting their street style into the spirit. It’s getting spooky out and celebrity style is going skeletal.

The list of celebrities rocking the skeletal trend is basically a who’s who list. Rapper Meek Mill recently partied it up in NYC wearing an Alexander McQueen skull tee, while the Biebs has been seen with a skeletal face mask that covers his mouth. Miley Cyrus donned a skull romper right before her big hair cut.  Vanessa Hudgens & Emma Roberts opted for bones on their shirts, while Nicole Richie accessorized skulls into her ensemble.

As you can see, this spooky style can get more use than just on Halloween. Even Cher Lloyd wears the trend on her sleeve with a skull tattoo. You don’t have to take it to that level to rock the trend.  Continue reading…

A Little Fringe Goes a Long Way

By Kelsey

Would you like to play up your inner boho style without looking like you just attended Coachella?  Take small steps into the hippie-chic world and try fringe.

Fringe accessories are a great way to show your effortless style, without getting lost in a sea of flowers and unsightly vests.  Fringe bags and sandals are a must for an effortless bohemian, carefree summer outfit,  but please, one fringe accessory at a time.

Fringe sandals range from short, midlength and tall creating different looks for every outfit.  Fringe bags come in a variety of colors and shapes to give your outfit head turning attention. Both these looks can be paired with a printed sundress or casual outfit.  These boho-chic and often vintage-inspired accessories are showing up all over Hollywood. Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie, and Kristin Cavallari have all been spotted with their fringe accessories, making fashion look effortless.

Hollywood Head THONGING It Up!

Some call it a headband, a head dress, or a head thong. I prefer the latter of the three and here are the celebs that prefer the style.

Celebs: Vanessa Hudgens, Nicole Richie, Khloe Kardashian, and now Nicki Minaj.

Here’s our girl Nicki wearing it at the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime performance.

You want it like that? You got it like that … and on a skinny budget.

This piece makes a statement so don’t overdo your look. Pair with dark skinny jeans and a flowy solid top to keep the boho-chic style wearable.

Wired: Feathers Take Flight – Even in Your Hair

Feather earrings have been all over lately, and I’m sure you’ve seen some stylish ladies sporting feathered headbands. But that’s not where it ends. This trend is really taking flight and now you wear feathers anywhere, even as hair extensions … yeah, hair extensions. This new fad is a favorite among celebs like Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Blake Lively, but now you can rock feathers – whether in you hair, on a ring, or around your neck  – on a skinny budget.

First up, the Necklace.

This necklace is so beautiful, but it’s almost $40.00 from Express. There are two ways around this price problemo. A coupon -click herebut, you’ll have to spend more to save. Or, the much much better alternative is to hit up your local H&M. I found a nearly identical necklace for under $8.00!! Hurry, I got the last one right off the mannequin in the bronze with pink feathers. My store still has the silver with black feathers left.

The Headband.

The Ring.

Nicole Richie is a style icon and this ring from her line House of Harlow isn’t unattainable.

Tag: House of Harlow 1960 Feather Row Ring in Gold, $31.00 at Singer22.

Take Note: only is size 7 or 8. Need a size 6? Charm and Chain has it for a buck more. It’s 14 k gold plated and so pretty!

If earrings are what you want then check out this recent post.

And now, for the hair extensions! This can be costly and few salons do this, at least around where I live (Philly). It’s a trend from the West Coast, but that doesn’t mean you need a house in the Hollywood Hills to get some feather extensions.

Here are the links to two different kits one is $10.00 at Mia and the other is $22.00 at HairFlairs.com. Take your pick, but the latter choice is by the same company that made  tinsel extensions Beyoncé to wear at last year’s Grammy Awards.

Every week Trend Hungry (and me, I’m Jessie!) will be giving the fashion 411 on a skinny budget on Wired 96.5! Please listen in on Friday mornings, become a fan on Facebook, and follow @trendhungryblog! Thank you for reading!!

Casual Friday: Daisy Dukes and Tights

Hi Trendsetter!

It’s Casual Friday and in my neck of the woods (Philadelphia) it’s unusually warm! Doesn’t that entice you to break out the daisy dukes? Hold up, it’s not that warm yet and these short shorts are NOT appropriate for work. But, add some patterned tights you’ve been sporting all winter and you’re set!

Nicki Minaj knows how to rock shorts in the cool temps, but this is NOT the look I’m talking about.

Nicole Richie, on the other hand,  executes the look quite nicely.

Ya dig? Black tights can be purchased anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE -Bloomingdale’s, JCPenney, CVS … wherever you want!

As for jean shorts, you probably already have a pair that would go great with tights. If not, here’s a distressed pair via Urban Outfitters, $39.00.

Would your place of employment let you wear this? Mine would, but radio stations aren’t terribly strict with dress codes.

Disco-Darling Makeup

Jackie on That ’70s Show always looked enviable. She somehow made those psychedelic styles look fashion forward instead of the embarrassing excuses for outfits you can find on yearbookyourself.com. Retro is in. Nichole Richie, Rachel Zoe and Kate Hudson have been rocking the trend way before this post and it’s now going mainstream.

Want to travel back about four decades? Step one – makeup! Here’s the best retro makeup kit to get you started.

Benefit’s Scene Queen Kit. This kit has the essentials to take you from work to play. $38.00 may sound like a lot, but it’s not. You’re getting lots of goodies with this kit. From eye-catching coral lips, to seductive eyes and coral-kissed cheeks – this kit will hook you up.

My faves: Okay, this whole kit is seriously amazing. I have a special place in my heart for Benefit because they’re so darn good at looking appealing. I’m a sucker for packaging, and this box it comes in makes me feel ready to put on some wedged espadrilles and hit the disco all night long.

The packaging may attract me, but what keeps me coming back for more is how amazing the makeup is. This kit, much like many of their other kits, is all you need. It’s got something for your eyes, lips and face. It even comes with instructions. I like to know that I’m using the products properly and it makes doing my makeup so simple.
