Manicures: How to “Nail It” This Valentine’s Day

Waiting and wishing for the perfect Valentine’s Day this year? I hope you’re planning on more than indulging in chocolate truffles and conversation hearts! Whether you’re coupled up or riding solo this V-Day, it’s the perfect chance to rock a cute and flirty mani! Break out your reds, pinks, hearts and sparkles, and with little creativity, you’ll have a romantic manicure that will have all your friends swooning a “Be Mine” <3!

So we all know the classic red manicure is always beautiful, but I think Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to shake things up a bit. So we searched the internet for some easy DIY’s for your digits!

1. Pink & Gold. This is similar to what Tracy Reese showed at this past NYFW. And, it’s something you can totally do free hand. Check out how Ivana Thinks Pink pulled it off! She did a video tutorial so stealing the looks is easy breezy!

2. Do Dots.  To achieve dots on your digits, simply apply a base coat of red. Let your nails dry fully, then, using a a dotting tool (tooth pick or pointy Q-tip will do the trick), dip the end in a white polish (even White Out works!) and apply polka dots in any design you wish! Wait several minutes for the dots to dry to apply a clear top coat. Too cute!  We found this look at Clothes, Cosmetics and Chat

3. Seeing Pink. Check out this mani mix by Dressed Up Nails. It’s as user friendly as it gets, but still makes a statement.

4. Over-The-Moon-In-Love Mani.  My personal favorite style may seem like the most intricate and challenging style, but even a nail-art newbie like myself pulled this one off with ease. The Beauty Department created this tutorial and they’re ultra fab for giving in-depth tutorials. It’s your basic half-moon mani, but with nails strips underneath instead of polish. Here’s the Trend Hungry tutorial on the half-moon mani.

Now that you’ve seen our faves, show us what you’ll be rocking this V-day! Comment and share your own marvelous manis or Instagram a pic and tag #trendhungry or @trendhungryblog!

New Favorite Nail Polish – Confetti!

Today I was on WBRE’s PA Live talking nail colors for fall. There are lots of nail trends and I have a new favorite brand for the skinny budget shoppers! It’s called Confetti and it’s under $2.00 a bottle. So cheap, but the color looks so rich. They’ve got a nice selection of colors.

It’s also 3 free – no Formaldehyde, Toluene or DBP. Most brands that are 3 free are pricy, so this brand is such a steal and accessible at your local CVS.

My current fave is the greige tone called Moonstruck….

It looks a lot like this Chanel color.. no?

Tag: Chanel Particuliere, $32.90 at Amazon.

I like Confetti’s price WAY more!

Cinco De Mayo Strawberry Margarita Nails

Cinco De Mayo is getting dangerously close! It’s a day of margaritas, fiestas, and going out … so you better look good!

I’ll be conquering a shift at the radio station I work at, but afterwards I’m going to need a reward and what I’ve got in mind is a tall strawberry margarita! Whether you’re over 21 or not, I’ve got a fashionable version exclusively for your digits.

It may not be new this season or even this year, but this is a mani/pedi color of perfection for spring and summer. It’s bright, but not too bright, and looks killer with a tan. I honestly feel tanner when wearing it, but I think that’s just in my head.

Score it now for under $6.00 on Amazon. How’s that for a skinny budget??

Nails as Fierce as Katy Perry

If you follow Katy Perry’s style, then you know she’s all about the digits – AKA her nails! That’s probably why she partnered with OPI to make a line of polishes. Like Justin Bieber’s line (yes, Justin Bieber had a nail line), each of the four colors are named after  her new songs.

Each shade has shimmer, just like the star, but the standout shades are Teenage Dream – a bubble-gum pink glitter explosion and Last Friday Night,  which is also glitter central but in electric blue. If that’s not enough for your mani/pedi, add design with OPI’s Black Shatter. It’s a black coat that creates a crackle effect. All you do is swipe it over your color of choice and watch it crack. Add a shiny topcoat and you’ve got nails just like Katy Perry…

…or like Katy’s Perry’s mom, pictured below. (stole it off @katyperry‘s twitpics)

Perry’s mamasita is rocking Teenage Dream with Black Shatter on top.

Okay, these colors aren’t at every salon/store OPI is sold. They’re a little more hard to find, since they’re a haute item, but I got them on a skinny budget on Amazon. For the mini set (includes the  four colors pictured above, not black shatter) it’s $8.95 plus shipping $2.95. There’s a good deal going on for a kit that includes five full-size bottles for only $41.00 also on Amazon – technically a better deal than the mini kit and wishing I waited for this deal.

Take Note: The minis are tiny, but it’s the cheapest way to get a sample of all four colors and trust me, you want all four! The bottles may be mini but the brushes works really well and these colors go on smooth. Honestly, I was super excited to wear the two sparkliest shades (work great, but can’t skimp with only one coat), but now I’ve graduated onto the other shades.

Are these nails the best accessory or what?!? Leave a comment, tweet me @trendhungryblog, and subscribe!

Beige and grey had a lovechild and it’s now an overflowing trend for your nails griege. Think of it as the new neutral for nails. Last month, Chanel came out with three fabulous khaki nail colors in honor of Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out – an annual shopping celebration that took place this year on Sept. 10.

Kathy Lee Gifford likes the Khaki Rose (pictured above on right).

Chanel colors retail at $25.00. As much as I love the shades, I just can’t justify spending that much on ONE nail polish.

Essie’s Mink Muffs,  Chinchilly, and Sew Psyched (pictured on left) are among popular shades in the greige realm. Essie nail polishes tend to be around $8.00, but prices vary depending on the shop. Better yet, hit up Bed Bath & Beyond with a 20% off coupon.

It’s always much cheaper to give yourself an at-home mani/pedi. If you buy a bottle of salon-grade polish for $8.00,  that’s numerous wears and touchups at a fraction of what one manicure would cost.

If you’re looking for an even thriftier option opt for a drugstore-discount brand. New York Color and Wet N. Wild can ring up as low as $.99.

N.Y.C. – Wing It Wine Creme, Wet N. Wild – Shield, Revlon – Gray Suede
