Brightening Face Mask Using Thanksgiving Foods. Yum Yum!

It’s time for another beauty DIY, and since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, I thought it’d be a great time to break out our favorite holiday sides and use them to their full potential. Two of my personal favorite holiday foods, cranberries and sweet potatoes, are loaded with beauty benefits and I’ve got the perfect pick-me-up for dry, dull winter skin.

thanksgiving dinner face mask {image via}

What You’ll Need (and Why):

Cranberries

(1/2 cup processed or blended to pulp). This berries are rich in antioxidants, and vitamins C and B. They are a quadruple threat, boasting anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, brightening, AND softening properties which help skin really glow.

Sweet potato

(1/2 cup steamed) This delicious veggie is high in vitamin A, which not only keeps skin healthy and glowing, but helps boost collagen and elastin production, which will improve skin’s elasticity.

1 tbsp honey

Honey is a regular in my DIY masks, as it contains natural healing moisture, which won’t clog up or pollute pores.

1 tsp organic yogurt

Another facial feature, plain organic yogurt is loaded with anti-bacterial cultures which help to clear any build-up, make-up, and excess oils. These cultures also help to treat and heal acne.

1 tbsp coarse brown sugar

The coarseness of this sugar works well on dull skin to remove dead skin cells. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend skipping this ingredient.

How-To Make:

First start by mashing up the sweet potato with the honey in a small bowl. Add the processed cranberries (which should be more like a juicy pulp at this point). Lastly, add the yogurt and sugar and mix until smooth. Apply mask to face and neck and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. You’ll be surprised by how bright and smooth your skin will look and feel!

Another easy way to use household items to make a name brand quality product, but without the chemicals or the costs. This whole at home facial thing is really up my alley, what do you think?

How many times have you noticed a blemish coming on and not had any treatments on hand? And if you do have those fancy spot treatments, why are you spending so much money on them?! We have a very simple, very effective at home solution to fix you blemish woes and get you flawless skin in no time.

zap zits quick

All you will need for this DIY miracle treatment are some on-hand household items:

  • 3 aspirin
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp. warm honey (optional)
  • 2-3 tbsp. baking soda

Mash and grind up the aspirin into a near powder using a rolling pin or the bottom of a coffee mug. Add powder to small dish and mix in lemon juice until a paste forms. If you have dry skin, add the option warm honey for additional moisture (Note: if you have oily or sensitive skin, skip the honey). On clean skin, apply a thin layer of the mixture to affected areas. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, or until dry. Wipe off with a washcloth dipped in warm water and baking soda. Splash face with cold water once all treatment is removed.

Why is this treatment so effective? Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory and contains the well-known blemish fighter salicylic acid, which makes for a pimple fighting powerhouse. Lemon juice contains concentrated citric acid, an anti-bacterial ingredient which helps to heal acne and even out skin tone. The honey helps to soothe itchy and dry skin and plumps skin with organic and natural moisture. As for the removal, warm water helps to open up pores and the baking soda is a great exfoliator, which will leave your skin smooth and soft. Once all is said and done, the splash of cold water will snap pores back shut!

Top 6 Fall Nail Trends You Need to Try Now!

As the cooler temps arrive, our wardrobes aren’t the only thing that change up for fall. One of my favorite autumn changes (aside from the leaves) are the reinstatement of fall manis. On the runway, there were classic deep red and black nails, but this season is also filled with some unexpected nails we can’t wait to try! We’re here to give you the top nail trends for this fall, from deep dramatic hues to heavy metals to unexpected shocks of color, read on to find your next go-to favorite.

fall nail trends

1. Matte

Popping up all over the fall 2013 runway, not to mention Pinterest boards, the newest and most popular nail trend is matted nails. Switching up everything you know about your traditional super shiny, high gloss manis for a muted finish looks anything but dull. Our fave was the red nails spotted at Badgley Mischka.

Deborah Lippmann Red Silk Boxers, $19.00 (If you’d like the color straight from the runway, available Holiday 2013)

Revlon Matte Top Coat, $4.99 (For those of us who want to stick with our tried and true polishes, this top coat can be applied to give any polish a matte finish)

2. Metallic

Gold, gunmetal, silver, and bronze nails give you a hard rock edge while still looking completely elegant. Our favorite metal finish has been this striking gunmetal, as seen at Monique Lhullier.

On model: Essie Over the Edge, $8.00.

Our fave gold: Maybelline Color Show Nail Color in Bold Gold, $2.99.

Our fave silver: Sally Hansen Insta-Dry in Silver Sweep, $3.49.

3. Deep Red

(or Oxblood, which I can’t bring myself to say). This hue, whatever you’d like to call it, is a classically beautiful fall shade, perfect for any occasion and pairs well with all skin tones. We’ve been eyeing up the chic red nails at Wes Gordon:

On model: Essie Bordeaux, $8.00.

Other blood-red raves: Nicole by OPI Kardashion Kolor in Sealed with a Kris, $8.00, Revlon ColorStay Longwear in Velvet Rope, $4.99, Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Wine Not, $6.59.

4. Back in Black

The color formerly observed for only the toughest of the tough gals (and even guys), is back in the spotlight once again. Black is a seemingly intimidating nail color, but looks exceptionally sexy, chic, and gorgeous. Don’t believe me? Check out these amazing nails from BCBG Max Azria :

Picture 16 {image via NailPro}

On model: OPI Black Onyx topped with OPI Matte Nail Envy, $8.00 each.

Other best blacks: Essie Licorice, $8.00, Butter London Union Jack Black, $15.00.

5. 3-D Embellishments

In some shows, the most eye-catching part of the runway was not the clothes, but the nails. From the gold totally blinged out claws at DKNY, to the colorful gems and jewels at Libertine, this trend has upgraded nails from a mere accent to show stealers! If you want to try this trend, we suggest starting off with an accent nail before diving into embellishing all of your digits. Look below for our fave runway inspirations:

6. Neutral Nudes

A modest and feminine nude manicure looks warm and romantic and is perfect for everyday wear. Our fave look was from designer Gabriela Perezutti, who paired up with OPI, where models with lacquered with “Don’t Pretzel My Buttons.”  Also a hit for fall was the buffed out beige from Alexander Wang.

On model: OPI Don’t Pretzel My Buttons, $9.00.

More nice nudes: Butter London All Hail the Queen, $15.00, Sephora Collection Nail Polish in Beige Pink, $5.00.

Fall Beauty DIY: Pumpkin Face Mask

Put down those Pumpkin Spice lattes and prepare to be pampered by everyone’s favorite fall fruit (yes, it’s a fruit!). Fall really translates into pumpkin everything, so why not add skin-saving, gold mine to the long list of yummy uses?

I’m here to introduce you to your new favorite face mask, perfect for replenishing skin after the brutal summer sun. “The Pumpkin Pamper,” as I have so cleverly named it, contains only four ingredients and can be made in seconds. Let’s get started.

pumpkin-facemask

What You’ll Need and Why:

  • 3/4 cup of 100% pumpkin puree (it’s much easier to just buy a can of this stuff, but be mindful to check the label and only buy if there are no added chemicals or ingredients). Why? Pumpkin is bursting with Vitamin A, C, and Zinc, which help replenish and heal damaged skin.
  • 1/4 cup “live” yogurt. Why? Enzymes in live cultured yogurt kill unwanted bacteria, which helps to unclog pores and treat acne.
  • 2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Why? EVOO is rich in Vitamin A & E which help to soothe and smooth tired skin
  • 1 tbsp organic honey. Why? Honey is full of antioxidants, which help to reverse sun damage by eliminating free radicals caused by overexposure to the elements.

Mix all ingredients together (by hand) in a small bowl. Pumpkin is best absorbed when used on moist skin, so I recommend applying this mask right after the shower while your skin is still damp. For better results, hop out of the shower and crank the hot water to create a steamy bathroom. The humidity will open up pores, which will allow for best absorption.

Apply mask and wait 10-12 minutes. The longer it stays on the better!

TH Fall 2013 Ad Campaign Awards

As the famous and adored September issues are known for their super-sized page counts, we all know the real bulk is in the ads. After all, September issues are for the consumer to use as their Fall fashion bibles, right? But the ads don’t stop there. From TV, to billboards, to Instagram and even Vine, fashion ads are everywhere you look and we’re here to hand out awards for our faves.

Most Likely to Make You Want to Go to School: TOMMY HILFIGER DENIM

College prep king Tommy Hilfiger is known for his classic Americana group ads, but this year’s TH Denim ad is making us feel nostalgically collegiate.

Most Creative (or Most Likely to Make You Go WTF?….):  KENZO

Kenzo always exhibits funky and fresh designs and patterns, and this time this eccentric personality goes beyond the runway and onto ads. Bugs, pins, mini-people, tweezers? Nightmare? Brillance? Not sure what to call them, but these ads sure grabbed our attention.

Best Designer Cameo: JASON WU (JASON WU AND CHRISTY TURLINGTON)

While most designers don’t feature themselves in ads (ahem, except Marc Jacobs),  Jason Wu went for it and nailed it. It looks like Wu and Turlington were just hanging out having a fun lunch and someone happened to snap a shot of them (which may very well be the case here). Definitely makes me want to hang with Jason Wu.

BB cream for hair

Product Junkie: BB Cream…For Hair? YES!!!

Remember the hype? The “all-in -one miracle product” that came to change the beauty game forever? I’m talking about the wildly popular BB and CC creams that have completely taken over, replaced foundation, and have planted themselves permanently into our morning routines. If you haven’t already given in to this new(ish) found phenomenon, the new addition to the BB fam is sure to get you hooked. Introducing BB and CC creams for your hair!

BB cream for hair

Thank the hair gods.

Now my hair problems (well, most of them) can be tamed and treated in the same “10 solutions, 1 step” fashion as my skin, thanks to the BB/CC magic. This product, released initially by Pantene, can be used on wet or dry hair and boasts 10 hair solutions we can all benefit from: silky softness, enhanced shine, moisture, frizz control, tamed fly-aways, manageability, repaired rough hair, strength against damage, smoothness, and heat protection. Honestly, what more could you need?

Be mindful.

There’s one important thing to keep in mind when trying this trend: be mindful of your hair type. If you have oily hair, use less product and apply away from roots to avoid excess oil build up as this product is chock full of moisturizers. It may be best to apply on dry hair for your first time use so you can gauge the correct amount (it’s harder to tell how much product you apply while hair is still wet). For dry hair, apply when wet prior to drying to avoid a frizzy, post blow-out mess. Keep in mind the amount of product you are using, start with a quarter size and apply more post blow drying where necessary.

Overall, I love this product. I’m a huge fan of anything that can cut my routine time down (I think I’ve got a best time of 8 minutes). Strong enough to tame my tresses, but light enough for everyday use, definitely an A+ in my book.

pantene-bb-cream-for-hair

Try the trend.

Aside from Pantene, other brands have taken to the trend, check em’ out below. Let us know what you think of the BB takeover!

1. Pantene Pro-V Ultimate 10 BB Créme $15.87 for 2-pack

2. Alterna Caviar CC Cream 10-in-1 Complete Correction $25.00

3. It’s a 10 Hair Care Miracle Silk Smoothing Balm $19.99

5 Faves: Mackenzie’s Top Eye Liners Under $10

Even if you’re not a hardcore product junkie, I’m sure you have multiples of a few makeup essentials (mascaras, liners, brushes, etc) which you either rotate use of or just have started stockpiling in case of some sort of makeup apocalypse.

I’m 100% guilty of this. Id say I have about 4 mascaras and 6 liners I keep in rotation, and even a few unopened backups. But it’s good to have multiples, you never know what you’re going to need, where you’re going to go, or what look you want to create!

Here’s my list of top 5 liners, all of which serve a unique purpose and fit a skinny budget.

1. Maybelline Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Liner. This is my go-to liquid liner when I want a super thin and precise look. The brush is hands down the easiest to create exact lines. $7.49 at Ulta.

top-affordable-eye-liners

2. Sephora Collection Eyeliner Pencil. This pencil is what I use for an easy, everyday look. The pigments are exact and color lasts all day. I love it because you don’t need to use a ton, which makes the pencil last longer than most. I usually only have to sharpen once a week. $9.00 at Sephora.

sephora-eyeliner-review

3. L’Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Liquid liner. I use this when I need super long-lasting liner. This has shown to be hands down the longest lasting liner I’ve ever tried (it survived a whole beach day!) $9.99 at Ulta.

4. Prestige Eyeliner in Denim. When you want a pop of color, reach for a strong blue or purple. These colors make all eyes pop, and add a little spunk to your look. $4.29 at Ulta.

5. Maybelline Line Express Eyeliner in Brownish Black. This liner is great for when you want a subtle smoky eye. Not too dark of color, plus one end is a smudging brush to give you that perfect smoky look without having to use any other product! $4.99 at Target.
