{ Dare To Wear } Heat-Wave Chic

Philadelphia style blog

Holy hot temps! We took these pics in the summer swelter in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, of course! I love living so close to this amazing city, but dressing for these hot temps without showing too much skin can be a challenge. Makeup melts off and clothing must be light or else it will be covered in sweat. TMI? Maybe, but it’s true.

So when shooting these looks I knew they’d have to be outfits that could beat the heat. A cotton skirt + a tank top is about as easy and breezy as it can get. Add a few accessories and voila, an outfit fit for wherever the hot day goes. I plan on wearing some version of this again this weekend, since we are scheduled for some seriously steamy days.

{ Style Tips }

1. Hot temps call for light, airy colors and fabrics.

2. Outside for the day? A big-brimmed hat is a must-have accessory. It will help block the sun from your face and enable you to actually see in the bright sun. I ALWAYS bring a hat to the pool or beach so I can read my book or magazine with ease.

3. Afraid of long skirts? Look for one with a subtle high-low hemline to elongate. Plus it will allow you to show off your shoes.

4. A little pop of color goes a long way.

{ Dare To Wear } Summer-Style To The Maxi

hot-weather outfit ideas

Like my dress? Thanks! I got it at a consignment shop and tend to wear it more than other maxis I’ve paid much more for.

Why? The cut is so complementary, even on my 5’2 1/2 frame. The fabric is super light (perfect for the heat wave we’ve been having), but not sheer. Oh, and there’s a slit.

I’ve worn this baby casual as well as more dressed up … and to think I almost didn’t buy it!

Why? Well, like I said, it’s from a consignment shop. It’s not that I don’t shop thrifted threads (I actually love to!). I found this fab find while I was selling some of my stuff to Plato’s closet. When I’m cleaning out my closet I try not to pack it right back up, but this maxi was special. For one, it wouldn’t need to be hemmed. So I tried it on and never looked back.

{ Style Tips }

1. Accessorize your hair to beat the heat. Sometimes it’s just too hot out for a big statement necklace. A headband or pretty clip keeps hair out of your face and leaves less of a need for jewelry.

2. Pick a maxi dress with a high waist to elongate your legs. I’m under 5’3 and yet, this long style works. Why? Because it goes in right below the bust, making the lower half appear way longer.

3. Dress it up with an evening bag. I’ve got a few vintage favorites that I turn to often. A little beaded clutch has a way of taking this from the beach to perhaps a beach wedding?

Dare to Wear, My Style

{ Dare To Wear } Vibrant Print = Vacation Vibes

lifestyle blog Jessie Holeva

Summer, it’s so nice of you to join us! Yup, it’s officially that season and I’m breaking out my warm-weather favorites. I am so thrilled that it’s finally the sunny season and I am so ready to wear those super-summery styles that have been patiently hanging in my closet.

For this look I channeled my inner girly girl (not hard to do) and went for it with this bright and bold print. We walked around Philly’s Old City section to snag the shots, but I sure did feel like I was on a tropical trip.  The outfit must have transported me! Another reason I’m fond of this look: it’s a romper, yes a romper. So I am pretty much wearing shorts but look a whole lot more dressed up, love that! Okay, now to the pics and styling tips. Happy scrolling!

1. Nude shoes are always a good idea. Bought this pair for a wedding and I’ve already been wearing them for so much more, clearly!

2. Go all the way. This romper is fun and a little loud so I opted for a bright bag. Why? Because it can keep up with this vibrant print. It’s summer, so it’s time to embrace bright hues and be carefree!

3. You’re never too old for a dragonfly hair pin. I adore beautiful hair clips. When everyone was into the bufferfly clips (circa 1998) I was drawn to dragon flies. Now that my hair is short I find myself reaching for pretty hair pins more often. I got this one at the Devon Horse show from an accessory designer and oddly enough, I was wearing this romper that day too!

{ Dare To Wear } Denim + Denim

fashion blogger denim outfit inspiration

It’s casual. It’s cool. It’s often my uniform for living life. Denim on denim, or the “Canadian tuxedo” as many call it, is easy and effortless. Plus you can take it so many different ways, depending on how you accessorize it. A bright heel, slip-on sneaker, or perhaps snake-skin loafers — all-denim dressing is can be go in whatever direction you’re feeling. That probably what I love about it most. My mood changes and with this laid-back canvas I can easily switch up my style with a swipe of lipstick or by pulling a statement necklace out of my clutch (yes, I usually have a few accessories on hand for those very moments).

{ Style Tips }

1.Tie it up. It’s a simple trick to fix a wrinkled shirt (or in my case, a dress, yes the top is actually a dress) and helps create more of an hourglass shape on the body.

2. Infuse your own flare to a monochromatic look with your accessories. Try a printed shoe on for size or a unique necklace.

3. Similar washes work well together. Keep your denim on denim feeling summertime-fine with light jeans and a pale chambray top.

4. Experiment to craft your own style. I love dark denim and medium washes too, so mix and match until you find what YOU like. Sometimes I like to tuck my top and other times I like to tie the top or even wear it open over a tank top. Have fun and make it your own.

{ Dare To Wear } Yoga Pants as Real Pants

philly fashion blog

Hello, hello! How I’ve missed you so! I took a little break from blogging (most of May! eeee!!). That was the first time I’ve ever taken a real blogging break since the blog started over five years ago. Work got busy. Life got busy. I needed to reflect. I felt kinda burnt out and ended up getting a fever/bug/awful cough. I also went to Nashville for a Bachelorette weekend in honor of one of my best friend’s getting hitched (before I got sick). Now I’m back, feeling better than ever and am flooded with lots of content ideas so stay tuned for more regularly scheduled outfit posts, style tips, shopping guides, and even some beauty and lifestyle videos. I’m so excited to be back at blogging. Wow, it seriously feels refreshing to be typing again!

But, before I keep on blabbing here are some outfit pics from my last shoot with Audrey in Fishtown. This one required crashing a little kid soccer game. The field made for the perfect backdrop for this slightly-sporty style. how to wear yoga pants philly fashion blog

{ Style Tips }

1. Create a waist by tying a sweater around it. Ta-da, instant hourglass.
2. DO wear a dark lip in warm weather. It’s unexpected and feels a little edgier in the summer.
3. Infuse color to a gray-scale outfit by opting for a piece in a dusty shade, like a pale pastel bag, or a cardi in a heathered hue.

{ Dare to Wear } Retro-Inspired Ladylike Style

Jessie Holeva fashion blog 2016

I’ve always had a thing for retro styles. The circle skirt + this little jacket that I’ve owned for like 10 years = a ladylike look with a mid-century vibe and lots of personality, perfect for a bridal or baby shower. Note to self: remember this outfit the next time I’m running late to a daytime event.

{ Style Tips }

1. Like it? Wear it with confidence. It’s the secret sauce to any look.
2. Neutral prints play well together. The little jacket has a geometric pattern, while the skirt is a sheer plaid. Thanks to the muted color palette these designs aren’t competing.
3. Tuck it in. Turn your tank dress into a top by simply tucking it into your skirt.

{ Dare To Wear } Who Says Statement Accessories Can’t Be Casual?

Jessie Holeva style

Sunglasses: Check. Animal-print socks: check. Floral-embellished clutch: check.

I heart this look, big time! This outfit consists of neutral clothes and shoes that can go with oh-so much, and eye-catching accessories.

When it comes to clothes I tend to live in styles that are more on the neutral spectrum. Then I can mix and match, and wear tons of times. When it comes to accessories, that’s where I really like to have fun! Why? Because cute accessories seriously excite me! It’s also how I customize and spice up my style.

3. Jean jackets heart springtime. They’re light, go with so much, and have a way of infusing a casual vibe. It totally helps keep this dress from feeling fancy with all the accessories.

4. Funky sunglasses or a novel bag instantly add life to a neutral outfit... or any outfit for that matter.

Three Ways To Wear Gray Jeans

how to wear gray jeans

When it comes to jeans, I like to get a pair that I absolutely love and will wear a ton. I’ve always enjoyed wearing gray because of its cool factor and versatility, so I knew it was just a matter of time (and finding the right fit). My latest denim addition: gray skinnies from AG jeans that fit like a legging with a cool, deconstructed hem.

{ Dare To Wear } My Everyday Style: Jeans + Tee + Vintage Vibes

AG jeans

Okay, this weather has been seriously throwing my blog photoshoot schedule way off. Last weekend it snowed, yeah, snowed! I know, #crazy #Imoverit #movingon. Now that I got that social-media banter out I can move on this latest outfit post. This is pretty much my go-to type of outfit. Skinny jeans, a flattering tee shirt, a cool little jacket, and some of my typical accessories  — vintage mini-statement necklaces, a vintage clutch that I got years ago for like $4 (it may have been less, I can’t remember), some understated shades and heels … and I’m out the door.

I’d rock this style for a creative meeting (in my work pretty much every meeting is creative), meeting up with a styling client, or just out for drinks and food with friends. It’s kind of casual, a little dressed up (thanks to the jacket + accessories), and looks like I’m not trying too hard… the entire vibe I’m always going for.  Keep scrolling for pics and style tips.

{ Style Tips }

1. Find a look you like and wear it again and again. I love switching it up (evidence: all the previous outfit posts), but certain combos are worth wearing on the regular. A look you know you love adds confidence to the day. True story: if I really hated my outfit I used to fake sick to go home from school. I can’t do that as an adult so I gotta be sure that I like my outfit before I leave and this is one combo I often turn to.

2. Add a jacket with a draped front to your wardrobe essentials. The shape on my topper is an outfit power player. It’s crazy flattering on the figure, making you look thinner + taller, all while keeping ya warm and adding some midsection coverage too.

3. Opt for vintage accents to make your outfit extra unique. This bag and the necklaces are items that I wear a ton and they always seem to snag the compliments. They were also crazy cheap (bought the necklaces at an estate sale and the bag was from a thrift shop) and are crazy special to me. I love how they infuse a ladylike energy to any outfit.

Speaking of vintage, while trekking around Manayunk to snag these pics we also stumbled into a super-cool little vintage store with the loveliest of things called Millay. The owner let us browse and snap some pics. I’ll be blogging those in a separate post and sharing some of my favorites from the shop. And guess what, they have even more amazing vintage styles online. Stay tuned for more on Millay Vintage!
