How To Dress Up a Jean Jacket
Dare to Wear, Fashion

{ Dare To Wear } Colorful Is The New Black

Happy Birthday to me! I’m officially a year older today and I thought a bright outfit was in order to greet my 27th year of life. Spring is on the horizon (though there’s also a snow storm coming for Philadelphia tomorrow), so at least this look helps me think warm thoughts. I’m also thinking lots of positive thoughts too and being really reflective. Birthdays tend to do that to me, and holidays in general.

So I thought I’d share a little more about me in this post than just style tips. Here are seven random facts, since 27 seems like overkill.

1. I’m not naturally a morning person, like at all. I’ve been slowly training myself to become one but at least once a week get off track.

2. My hair has always been really dark. I came out of the womb with this hair, though I highlight it and color my gray roots (yup!).

3. I always knew I wanted to be some sort of  “artist” and just didn’t know what or how. The jobs I’d imagine myself in as a kid include a cartoonist, actress, fashion designer, talk show host and magazine editor. My passions haven’t changed all that much.

4. I owe a lot to this blog. I started it as a way to work towards the things I naturally gravitate towards (style & media). I always looked at it as a tool to help me brand myself, but never did I think it would enable me to partner with brands I adore and land jobs I  dreamt of. Heck, without it my career wouldn’t have gotten off the ground.

5. I’m shy. I’m outgoing on TV segments and when hosting events but the truth is that when I’m not “on” I’m actually shy. If I saw a group of people sitting and I didn’t know anyone I’d likely sit alone and not want to bother them, but if I was with a friend I’d be the outgoing one and introduce us. Weird, I know.

6. My beauty routine is heavy on the DIY. I usually do my own nails, pluck my own brows, and color my hair. I like go to a pro for all tricky hair stuff – ombre, balayage, etc, but enjoy pampering myself. It’s fun for me.

7. I rarely plan outfits for myself in advance. My friends who text me asking what I’m going to wear already know this. For clients, photoshoots and segments it’s different. I like to have all that stuff almost 100% styled ahead of time, but for me I like to live in the moment and throw on what feels good.

{ Style Tips }

1. Embrace color. When planning this I didn’t hold up each accessory to the dress to be sure it matched. Instead I just tried things on and used my eye, and my photographer’s to decide what worked.

2. Use a  jean jacket to tone things down. Not only does the denim work well to not overwhelm all the color going on, but it also gives a casual element to the look, making this gorgeous maxi feel more daytime.

3. Balance your beauty with the outfit. It’s like proportions in clothes. If you wear a loose top, then go with a more fitted bottom. If you got with a colorful outfit keep hair and makeup simple. I went for a high bun and natural makeup tones, they’re always a safe bet with a loud outfit and looks good on everyone.

Budget Friendly Fashion Blog

DARE To Wear } a blog series dedicated to “dare to wear” the same thing three weeks in a row. If you’re gonna buy it, you better be able to wear it at least three ways, right? Each month a new item is featured and will be styled three ways over three weeks. Photos by Audrey Gallagher.

{ Photo Diary } Inside Jewelry Designer Marlyn Schiff’s Showroom

I love jewelry and lately you may have noticed that Marlyn Schiff pieces have been making cameos here on the blog and my Instagram. It probably has to do the fact that everything is beautiful, budget friendly, and that I had the pleasure of meeting Marlyn and visiting her Ardmore showroom last month. I had featured a few blingy baubles from the celebrity-loved line in TV segments and blog posts so it was exciting to finally get to learn more about the brand and meet the creator.

First of all, it’s a wonderland of pretty things. There’s jewelry everywhere, of course, and the vibe is a little boho and free spirited yet glamorous and fashionable. There’s dainty cuffs and chain necklaces, blingy statement pieces, stunning stones, and most pieces are under $100.  I felt inspired to take it all in, try on a few pieces, and go a little snap happy. Here are some pictures from my visit. Hope you like! I’ll be sharing more pictures of places I go and things I do with the header { Photo Diary }. Continue Reading

{ Dare To Wear } Dressed Fine For Valentine

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. I’m getting in the season of love with a little pink, red, and love-themed jewelry. This light shade of pink on the blouse is one of my favorite colors and reminds me of delicate beauty — think ballet slippers or a baby’s room. Now that I think of it, this is the color of my room back at my parent’s house. No wonder I’m so drawn to it.  Continue Reading

{ Color Crush } Pretty In Light Pink

There may be six more weeks of winter according to Punxsutawney Phil, but that shouldn’t stop you from springy shades. The color I’m currently craving is ultra-light pink, think ballet slippers or blush. Over the weekend I spotted a pair of jeans in the hue, then I wore a piece in the light and lovely color yesterday while shooting upcoming photos for this month’s Dare To Wear posts (disclosure: I usually take my all outfit pics for the month at once). Plus Valentine’s Day is right around the corner so this color is quite fitting to start wearing now to start transitioning into spring. Continue Reading

{ Gift It } DIY Hand Warmers

Forget Valentine’s Day and remember Galentine’s Day. It’s the fictional holiday created by Amy Poehler’s character on Parks & Recreation and it’s a day to celebrate your gals. Here’s a gift idea the ladies in your life will LOVE. The tutorial linked was found via Pinterest and created by graphic designer/mommy blogger Rae Ann Kelly, but I originally got the idea over the holiday when my friend stayed with me and had a set of hand warmers that someone DIYed for her – so thoughtful!

People go nuts for DIY gifts, especially when they’re awesome and these are. They don’t stay warm quite as long as a purchased heat pack but do the trick and cost little money and time to create. They’re great cold AMs on the commute or chilly PMs on the couch.

{ Interview } Tips On Fashion, Blogging & Dream Chasing

It’s getting to that point where people stop saying Happy New Year, but we’re not quite there so let me say it once more, Happy New Year! You may notice things look a little different around here. Sometimes I get the itch for change and nothing can stop me. When I was a kid I’d rearrange the furniture in my bedroom and pretty much every other room in the house. My parents would come home or wake up and be like, ” when did you do this?” I do this at my place now, remix my wardrobe and how I do my makeup, and so the blog sometimes also needs an impromptu upgrade. It wasn’t really impromptu. It was planned but happened sooner than scheduled.

Speaking of sooner than planned, the creation of this blog happened in a similar fashion. recently asked me about how the blog came about, my tips to aspiring bloggers, what’s in my bag and more. It was a lot of fun answering the interviewer’s questions as SA is the blog of Melissa Funtanilla, who recently celebrated her first year blogging at Trend Hungry!

I did the interview a little while ago so it was cool to go back and read it. It’s reminded me of two things that have been important in my journey and I’d like to be mindful of this year.
