{DIY Holiday Decorating} Anything Can Be An Ornament

Over the weekend I started holiday decorating and let me tell you, it puts you in the best mood. So do decorate, don’t put it off. And don’t feel like you have to spend a lot. Save your dollars for presents (though those too can be DIYed, ahem, Sharpie Mugs) and use what you got.

Here’s a few things I did over the weekend to deck the halls without even leaving home. These ideas pertain to trimming the tree. Mine happens to be a fake one of the slim variety and came with lights.

{Cloak With Glitter}

Glitter is gold for DIY holiday decorating. I covered floral decals that attach to shoes I don’t even own any more and bam, ornaments.

{Rework Old Jewelry}

As a vintage jewelry hoarder curator I do have some unrepairable pieces, plus I randomly save pretty things that I think may be able to turn into something. An old wreath pin missing stones becomes a wintery wreath ornament thanks to some nail polish, glitter, and a pipe cleaner for the hook. A tarnished dove necklace now hangs from one  of the higher Christmas tree branches. It’s only took some silver nail polish and shortening the chain. A star charm from a necklace and twine make another easy and unique ornament.

{Wrap It Up}

Presents under the tree instantly add the holly-jolly vibe. Since I was on a quest to fill up the bare branches and haven’t really shopped yet, I wrapped up a tiny case that earbud headphones came in and strung from the tree. (insert noise of the “That Was Easy” Button)

{String Things}

Got garland, a costume string of pearls, or even ribbon? Wrap around the tree. Or make your own. Paint popcorn with nail polish, let dry, then thread and string with care. Or even try a pasta garland. Or add string to something you’d to have for an instant ornament. I used some thread to turn my little macaroon trinket box into a Christmas decoration.

{Winter Escape} Tropical Travel Essentials Under $50

All I’ve been wanting is a winter escape, to bask in the sun’s glorious vitamin-D rays. Is that too much to ask for?

Planning a tropical trip? It’s difficult finding summer clothing this time of year in store, so for this style challenge online shopping is the way to go.

I love experiencing the East Coast’s four seasons, but Philly is getting a little too chilly for me. Feeling the same way? Trade in your heavy coats, scarves, and snow boots for some tropical travel essentials for your next getaway and think warm thoughts.

Ashley & Mary-Kate Olsen Create Cosmic Jewelry Under $40

If you’re a fan of Elizabeth and James jewelry get excited. Our favorite fashion twins and CFDA designers, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen have an affordable line worth adding to your Christmas list.

AMK x SM is a limited -edition jewelry collection for StyleMint. The out-of-this-world designs are inspired by constellations — hence the names Ursa Major, Hydra, Pyxis, and so on. The line really resembles the Olsens’ Elizabeth and James jewelry line. Both collections are simplistic and have a gorgeous cosmic theme. The main difference being the price — Elizabeth and James ranges from $95 – $395, whereas everything in the AMK x SM collection is either $29.99 or $39.99.

The accessories in their latest collection have a luxe feel, but all are extremely affordable, especially when you compare to one of their bags from The Row. Get ready to indulge and don’t wait, as past StyleMint jewelry collabs have sold out.

AMK x SM includes necklaces, earrings, rings, clutches, bangles, hand chains, and clutches. The collection is part of StyleMint’s limited-edition Studio Series, so you may not want to wait.

Another plus, the Olsens said they created “versatile pieces that transition easily from day to night”…can you say “Dare to Wear” worthy?

Style Tip: Because these accessories are minimalistic and dainty, it’s easy to stack and layer pieces. Pair jewelry with Flash Tattoos for a boho-chic look that not everyone will be sporting this holiday season.

{Trend Hungry Tuesday} Choker Necklaces

Another 90′s trend is back on the block. Choker necklaces, yeah they’re back. Rihanna has been wearing them a lot lately, including last night at the 2014 British Fashion Awards. She rocked a silver-sparkler choker paired with a Stella McCartney tuxedo blazer and not much else. Riri in Stella is always captivating.

Back to chokers, this trend has actually been around for a while. Google history of choker necklaces and there are images from centuries ago.

Celebs spotted wearing choker necklaces in this day in age include Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian West, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus.

As for chokers on the cheap, you can go bold and blingy for the holidays or try a tattooed style. You may have owned one in the 90s, I know I did. Check out the choker selection at NastyGal.com.

{Dare To Wear} Fur, Knits, And Prints, Oh My!

Okay December, I’m ready for ya. The weather here in the Philadelphia area has been a little all over the place. It was in the 70s one day last week, then the next there’s snow. Yesterday we snapped these during a was weirdly-warm spell. And then we packed it in because it began to pour, and we got the shots we needed.

This post is a little more picture heavy than usual. Hope you like and feel inspired to wear some faux fur in a jewel-toned hue. It made this look and may be one of my new favorite things. But is it the Dare To Wear item of the month? You’ll have to wait until next week to find out, unless I give a sneak peek on Instagram.

{Style Tips}

1. Is a wintery knit hiding your figure? A skinny belt does wonders for highlighting that waist of yours.

2. Position a pop of color near your face. This tip is for my ladies that are afraid of color. Position the color near your face and to draw the eye upward.

3. Wear evening accessories during the day. I absolutely love sporting little clutches that you’d normally save for an event or night out. They fit the essentials (cash, cards, phone, lip balm, extra earrings) and add femininity and glamour.

{DARE TO WEAR} a blog series dedicated to “dare to wear” the same thing three weeks in a row. If you’re gonna buy it, you better be able to wear it at least three ways, right? Each month a new item is featured and will be styled three ways over three weeks. Photos by Audrey Gallagher.

Hey Girl, What’s Your Fragrance?

The sense of smell is a powerful thing. A scent may remind you of someone or perhaps capture the attention of another. It’s also linked to memory and can bring you back to a certain time or special moment. The right fragrance, much like the perfect outfit, can even make you feel pretty or sexy when you put it on.

The sensual scent I’m spritzing these days is Viva La Juicy Gold Couture. It’s a decadent rendition of one perfume I used to be obsessed with, Viva La Juicy. If you were a Viva La Juicy fan then you’ll love this one as much as me.

The aroma starts fruity and sweet thanks to the notes of luscious wild berries, and then really entices with a warm kiss of honeysuckle and a luxurious elixir of golden amber, melted caramel, and vanilla. How yummy does that sound? It smells even more divine and you can really pick up on all those fragrant notes. The warm caramel makes me want to keep on spraying. I wish I could spritz some right now for you to smell, but the blog isn’t capable of that just yet.

Instead you can take a whiff of Viva La Juicy Gold Couture for yourself at Ulta. It’s truly captivating and is the icing on the cake to any outfit.

{Steal Of The Week} DIY Sharpie Mugs

Okay, gift-giving season is now in full swing. Teachers, friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, and more – there may be a lot of people on your list. Here’s one super-simple DIY anyone can do and bonus, it’s pretty darn thoughtful too. It’s also quite easy and inexpensive. Keep this idea in your back pocket for the next time you’re in need of a cool gift on the cheap.

It’s personalized mugs thanks to the help of permanent markers. Judging from Pinterest, DIY Sharpie Mugs are a present idea you can do a lot with. Try a quote, a print, or even a cute drawing. Write a nickname or term of endearment. Sketch then bake to seal the deal.

Here are few designs to get you inspired. Pin now, craft later.

Ready to craft it? If you clicked on any of the links above, you’ll see that each site gives their own preference on markers and baking specifications. Results vary by the marker and mug, but after reading a slew of tutorials I’d say to opt for oil-based sharpies and then bake the mug at 450 degrees for 30 minutes.

{Trend Hungry Tuesday} Black Friday Deals

It’s that time of year again. Black Friday is filled with steals and deals. Why bother to leave home when you can snag all these deals from your computer?  For this sale roundup I’m breaking it down by category and each has a celebrity tie-in. Ready?

Taylor Swift makes headlines this week for her cover look and interview with Asos magazine, coming out tomorrow.  Not only is she posing in the clothes, but she frequently wears the brand. Score styles from Asos for a deal,  30% off site wide and up to 70% off sale items. Also, how fab is this dress?!?

For holiday bling on a budget check out Bauble Bar for 15% off when you buy two items, 25% off when you buy three, and 35% off any four.

These double-sided earrings that look a whole lot like a pair of Dior studs Rihanna was spotted wearing.

Rita Hazan is the hair colorist to the stars. She’s behind the famous tresses of many celebs including J.Lo, Katy Perry, and Beyonce. For Black Friday her products will be 25% off. There’s a great spray-on root concealer that works wonders on getting some extra time out of your hair color. Want to try a trendy hair color? There’s a spray for that too, Pop Color.

Another celebrity favorite is Lip Tar by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. This stained lip gloss goes feels like satin and is 100% vegan. OCC will be offering 20% off site wide, so a Lip Tar that’s $18 will come to about $14.50. If you were wondering, Lucy Hale has been known to rock Lip Tar on the red carpet.

{Decorate On A Dime} Glitter Bow Garland

Holiday decorating, let’s do it on a shoestring. Heck, you probably already own a number of things that can can be reworked into a holly-jolly-holiday accents.

During one of the many Pinterest binges (it sucks you in!) I found a slew of amazingly-easy decorations that anyone can pull off, seriously! My favorite has to be the pasta garland. This wins because it’s super cute, a little crafty, and well, cheap.

You don’t need much skill. Brush on glitter and string together. Don’t you just love DIYs that require little to actually DO? Me too. For more  ideas, check out the post I wrote for The Fashion Spot on Easy DIY Decorations.
