{Trendy vs Spendy} Pleather // Leather

A wardrobe full of pieces that can be styled endlessly is definitely a Trend-Hungry-girl must (have  you seen the Dare to Wear column??). Faux leather is an affordable way to look chic and indulge in this fall trend – leather skirts. When the weather cools down throw on a comfy loose-fit knit sweater. The sweater gives off a super-casual style, so you can wear this from day to night. If you’re going for a more dressed-up look, pair your skirt with opaque tights and/or simple flat boots. The key to wearing boots with this is similar to Rule #1 from the Double Denim Trend: Mix your washes. Likewise, find some boots that don’t closely match your skirt.

Leather skirts can add some flair to your wardrobe, and all the Trendy & Spendy options below are so so so fabulous. Here are three different styles to choose from.

1. Pleats Please!

Trendy: Lily White, Pleat Faux Leather Skirt, $14.97

Spendy: Alice + Olivia Pleated Leather Skirt, $495.00

2. The Modern Midi

Trendy: Charlotte Russe Faux Leather Full Midi Skirt, $22.99 $15.00

Spendy: Valentino Lightweight Leather Skirt, $4,990.00

3. Flirty Minis

Trendy: Topshop Faux Leather Mini Skirt, $34.97

Spendy: Sam Edelman Faux Leather Mini Skirt, $89.00

Here’s how I plan on wearing my favorite leather skirt

{Trendy vs Spendy} Taylor Swift’s Laid-back Look

taylor swift style

A few weeks ago, Taylor Swift was seen in NYC wearing striped denim shorts, nude pumps, a blackless top, and a black handbag. Swift’s laid-back look is easy to obtain on a budget. The spendy striped shorts she picked are $79 and currently out of stock. No fear, our trendy version shorts are only $15. These pieces are so simple and chic to create a style perf for a summer day in the city. The color choice gives in a bit of a nautical feel too.

  taylor swift style

Forever 21 Striped Denim Shorts – $15 | Kacey Open Back Top – $16 | Charlotte Russe Pointed Toe Low-Platform Pumps – $32 | Target Merona Solid Tote Handbag with Top Handle – $40

I’m a big fan of creating a billion outfits with repeating pieces, and all of the pieces in this look are definitely dare-to-wear worthy. Remember Jessie’s Dare to Wear style tip – rework what ya got!

And, if you want to complete the  Swift look, apply red lipstick to get her signature pout.

{Trendy vs Spendy} Black Lace Looks for Less

Last week, Jessie talked about why an all black-everything outfit is a good look and I absolutely agree with her! New York Fashion Week showed many ways to wear black. The trend that stood out from the rest? Black lace. Designers, such as Vera Wang, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren featured black lace outfits in their NYFW 2014 collections. Of course, celebrities such as, Giuliana Rancic, Kendall Jenner, and Cate Blanchett, could not get enough of this chic look.

I love a little black dress with lace details all over.  This textured trend can be worn as a hint of detail for some edge or all over for a feminine vibe. Black lace is very versatile and perfect for date night, a cocktail party, or a night out with some friends!

Honestly, I’m lusting for all of these trendy and spendy pieces. Here’s how to get the black lace trend on a skinny budget:

from left to right

ASOS Lace High Neck Prom Dress for $37.64 | Forever 21 Charming Lace Skirt for $10.80 | Anne Klein Lace Overlay Sheath Dress – Elbow Sleeve for $129 now $48.37

Whether she’s attending a royal event, grocery shopping, or playing sports, Kate keeps an effortless and graceful look. She’s known for mixing spendy high end designer pieces with trendy street wear, so it’s easy for an average girl to achieve her royal style.

Here are five pieces under $50 for a royal inspired wardrobe:

1. Royal Bling

Kate wore a priceless diamond necklace borrowed from the queen.  It was crafted by Cartier in the ‘30s and is named The Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace.

{Trendy vs Spendy} Designer-Inspired Ankle Boots

Ankle boots and booties are an easy to wear shoe. This transitional shoe comes in a variety of designs, so they can be worn year round. There’s a pair to suit skinnies, jeans, dresses, or a skirt.

I’ve spotted three budget-friendly pairs that are just as stunning as these designer pairs. Below are three types – everyday wear, stiletto, and peep toe.

1. Everyday Wear

Suede booties are perfect to slip on for an everyday casual chic look. Wear under a wide-leg jean or cuff your skinnies and let the boots be a focal point.

Nine West Otilla Pull On Booties for $139 now marked down to $49.99 vs Rag & Bone Classic Newbury Booties for $495

2. The Stiletto

Layer with a black tight for long, sexy legs.

Michael Antonio Mains Bootie for $59 now marked down to $44.95 vs Barbara Bui Smooth Leather Ankle Bootie for $780

3. Peep Toe

Layer a fun tight for a peep of personality on a chilly day or save this style for a warmer temp.

Miss KG Black Peep Ankle Boots for $135 now marked down to $39 vs Burberry Peep Toe Booties for $750 now marked down to $525

My favorite type is the stiletto. I love to wear them with my favorite pair of skinny jeans for a night out. What’s your favorite type of ankle boot or bootie? Share how you’d style this shoe in the comments below!

{Trendy vs Spendy} Golden Globe Gown Edition

taylor swift golden globes looks for less

By Tanya Kertsman

Watching the Golden Globes is a time to sit back and enjoy as the glamour unfolds. As I watched Giuliana Rancic interview one gorgeous celebrity after another, there was one thought running through my mind. How do I get myself into one of these dresses? We all know that many of the gowns seen during award’s season aren’t cheap. Here are some budget-friendly options to help you mimic the look without spending the money. Bonus, nothing on this list costs more than $100.

taylor swift golden globes looks for less

1. Hot Pink

I have to start with the lovely Maria Menounos, wearing a hot pink BCBG Max Azria Atelier gown. This lady knows how to work red carpets. The dress is a wonderful combination of elegance and edge. The strategically placed cutouts, vibrant color, and flirty train are just the right ingredients for a red carpet look. The gold accessories and clutch play off her skin tone nicely and create a very cohesive look.

Look at any photo from the night and you can tell how relaxed and confident she feels, making the look that much better. Check out this colorful Jill Stuart Option for$318 $79.50!

2. Royal Blue

Amber Heard flashed some Angelina Jolie leg in this flowing Versace gown. The one shoulder neckline combined with the extra high leg slit gives off a very Grecian vibe. Check out this one shoulder dress so you can create your own attention-grabbing effect. The royal-blue dress is currently on sale for $315 $81.99.

3. Purple Colorblocking

This two-toned Oscar De La Renta dress, worn by Aubrey Plaza, strikes a nice balance between feminity and playfulness.  The alternative is currently on sale for$195 $62.19 and has a delicate bow in the middle to create a visual separation between the two colors.

4. Black & Red Colorblocking

Taylor Swift is no stranger to vintage looks. The singer looked stunning in this strapless Carolina Herrera gown wearing none other but her favorite color, red. She wore her signature red lip with soft blond curls, which added to the retro feel of the look. This dress has the same colorblocking, but on a budget. The blog Penny Chic tipped us off to this style find for just under $28.

{Trendy vs. Spendy} Valentino, Jimmy Choo, and Prada Look-alike Black Pumps

The classic black pump is a staple to a lady’s wardrobe. Just like their counterpart, the little black dress, the classic black pump is timeless and versatile. These pumps can be worn so many ways and for so many occasions, so they’re a wardrobe essential. The right pair can make a huge difference to compliment an outfit.

I’ve separated my favorites in three categories – pointy, rounded, and party pumps. Rounded toe is a shoe’s basic shape, pointy toe can lengthen your legs, and party pumps are simply fun to look at and shop for.

1. Rounded

Target’s Merona ‘Melanie’ for $29.99 vs. Jimmy Choo ‘Victory’ for $575

2. Pointy

Aldo ‘FRITED’ for $48.99 vs. Prada ‘Basic Pointed Toe’ for $650

3. Party

Dollhouse ‘Gravity’ for $44.95 now marked down to $39.90 vs. Valentino ‘Rockstud’ for $1,075

I think the black pump is an absolute essential and can go with anything.

What do you think about black pumps? Are they a wardrobe necessity? Which pair suits your style?
